My works reflect events, past and present, that have changed my life and forced me to mature. They are about the struggle that we go through to gain control and the lessons learned through those struggles. Exploring how we deal with these changes is where we begin to discover ourselves--our ideas, beliefs, and where we place our priorities.
The materials that I employ and the processes in which I work echo my concepts. Paint, graphite, and paper, become important, as they are layered one upon another. They relate to the experiences in my life where each experience builds on the last and impacts the next. The repeated singular movements that are presented in the pieces become a meditational activity, such as prayer and petitioning to God. The pieces tend to be life size which inclines them to feel human and more real. It allows them to take on a life of their own and to stand up next to the viewer. My drawings employ a minimalist compositional approach that is intended to reflect feelings of purity and honesty.
The decisions that I make throughout the path of the drawing represent a give and take between the subconscious and the conscious, between emotion and method. I am guided by new occurrences and idiosyncrasies in my materials that suggest my next direction, much like how our decisions in life are guided - with small whisperings and gentle pushes - a walk of faith. Each choice that I make in the work relates to the cycle of the past and the present. This becomes a method of working and eventually leads into and informs a larger body of work.
These works are tangible statements which reflect my intangible experiences. They are not meant to be taken as literal statements, but rather as records of development, change, and opportunity.
